What is Earnings Per Share – (EPS)? How to Calculate?

What is EPS
EPS is stand for “Earnings Per Share”
Think it as simple, Earnings per share (EPS) is how much i earn if i buy one unit of share. If “company A” EPS is $1, if i brought one unit of “company A” share, i will earn $1, simple enough. In Formal, EPS are the earnings returned on the initial investment amount.
For Example,
COMP-A current market price is $10, Earnings per share (EPS) is $1, i brought 1000 unit COMP-A share. I have to paid $10 x 1000 = $10,000 to match this order. Logically my 1000 unit COMP-A share will bring me profit of $1000 (1000 units x $1 (EPS)). It means my $10,000 investment will bring me $1000 or 10% in profit future.
P.S this is just logically calculation, it doesn’t guarantee that you will earn $1000.
How to Calculate EPS
Earnings Per Share (EPS) = Net Profit / Weight Average Shares Outstanding
Net Profit = Total revenue generated by company (Profit after tax / dividend or other expenses is deducted). This it simple, It mean how much this company earn.
Weight Average Shares Outstanding = Total company share issued to the market during EPS calculation period. Please access here to understand more about
Weight Average Shares Outstanding
Here I will show where to check Earnings Per Share. Earnings Per Share is usually mention at company’s annual report. Below is an annual report example from “IOICORP” year 2007. EPS calculation is mention at financial statement.

What is Price Earning Ratio (P/E)? How to Calculate?

What is P/E?
P/E is stand for “Price Earning Ratio”,
Think it as simple, P/E is how many years you take to recover your investment. If P/E = 5, it means you need 5 years to turn your investment in profit.
For Example,
I opened a company call COMP-A, every year COMP-A will paid investors $10. How much do you think investors will invest into COMP-A? Investors may invest $5 into COMP-A because COMP-A is opened by me, it could be risky because no people confident on me. COMP-A P/E = $5/$10 = 0.5, investors need 6 months to recover their investment and gain profit afterward.
P/E = Investor Paid $5 / Company Paid $10 yearly
If COMP-A is opened by Warren Buffett, every year COMP-A also will paid investors $10. How much do you think investors will invest into Warren Buffett’s company? Investors may invest $100 into COMP-A, why? because investors have more confident on Warren Buffett then me. COMP-A P/E = $100/$10 = 10, investors need 10 years to recover their investment and gain profit afterward.
P/E = Investor Paid $100 / Company Paid $10 yearly
How to Calculate P/E ?
P/E = Current Market Price / Earnings Per Share (EPS)
Current Market Price = Current Market price of a single share of the stock.
Earnings Per Share (EPS) = This is the net profit of the company for the most recent 12 month period, divided by number of shares outstanding.
For Example,
Stock A is trading at $30(current market price) and the earnings per share for the most recent 12 months period is $3, then stock A has a P/E ratio of 30/3 = 10.
For Example,
“Maybank” is trading at RM7.553(current market price) and the earnings per share for the most recent 12 months period is RM0.8258, then stock Maybank has a P/E ratio of 7.553/0.8258 = 9.14.
Why No P/E
Why some companies do not have P/E? This is due to following two reasons.
1) New company
EPS is base on net profit of the company for the most recent 12 months period divided by number of shares outstanding. New company has no 12 months period records, and it can’t calculate EPS, that why it can not calculate P/E as well.
2) Company Loss, No profit
If a company loss or no profit, EPS will show negative value because EPS = (-Net Profit) / No.of Share, that why it can not calculate P/E as well.
